Value Creation from Coffee Waste
In 2019, the USA used 3.5 billion pounds of coffee beans.
That's more than the weight of 4 empire state buildings!
By mass, coffee grounds contain 15% oil.
After brewing, coffee grounds are sent to the landfill.
Trapped in the grounds, the oil rots.
In 2019, coffee oil in US landfills released over 120 million pounds of CO2.
That's equivalent to 6 million gallons of burned gasoline!
At the Kawa Project, we are on a mission to upcycle waste coffee grounds to minimize agricultural waste in the US.
